Jonathan was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2003 out of Mississippi State, and spent several years in the Red Sox minor league farm system before earning the closer role for the Sox in 2006. Prior to the start of the 2007 season, the Sox considered making Jonathan a starter -- but he was put back permanently into the bullpen to serve as the team's closer for the start of the 2007 regular season. Jonathan has said he now cannot imagine going back to pitching as a starter.
Papelbon throws a fastball clocked as high as 99 mph, typically hitting the mid-90s, with great command. He has a good slider, changeup, curveball, as well as a splitter. He also is working on a cutter, and claims to have invented a slider/cutter combination pitch he calls the "slutter".
Jonathan is a two-time All-Star (2006 & 2007), the 2007 MLB Delivery Man of the Year, and is the first Boston pitcher to ever have two 30-save seasons. He was an integral part of the 2007 World Series champion Red Sox team.
