Why is U.s Soccer a Failure?
Major League Soccer
Did the U.S Soccer Federation invest enough into the game? I do not think so. Let look at U.S professional league which is called MLS (Major League Soccer). Most of the players is from U.S or just around North America such as Canada or Mexico. The clubs buy these players because they are cheaper than other international players. The U.S had the money to get the soccer professional player around the world, but they do not want to waste the money on their “new” sport. Since the investment are less attractive, the U.S soccer fan does want to watch the game in person or on T.V. They rather stay home to watch other countries professional leagues (Spain’s La Liga, English Premier League, Germany’s Budesliga, Italy’s Serie A etc). They feel that U.S soccer is too boring because there are not many soccer stars played in U.S league. Recently, some famous “over 30″ players come to U.S to make the league more popular and attractive. Some of them are Fredrik Ljungberg (Seatle Sounders), David Beckham (LA Galaxy), Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago Fire). These players barely compete in the other major European leagues, so they come here to make U.S soccer revolution. These players have very small effect because of their ages. David Beckham is a great known player when he played for Manchester United and Real Madrid. When he came to play for L.A Galaxy, he was almost retire his professional career. So it will not help much for U.S soccer. If the MLS want to increase their fans, they should invest greatly into the young professional players around the world before they become too expensive.
How many time did the U.S national team win the World Cup? The answer is ZERO! On the international level, the most recent socked 2-0 win was over the undefeated Spain in the Confederation Cup 2009. Then they lost to the best soccer country Brazil in the Final after U.S lead 2-0 in the first half. Now, U.S fans are still so proud about the winning of Spain and feel sorry for the lost to Brazil. Those feelings are too familiar to U.S soccer fan because their beloved national team never win in the Finals against the big teams. The U.S team have many talents who play for foreign countries. Clint Dempsey and Josy Altidore are two of talent ones. Even Landon Donovan is not play for foreigner but he is like the main man of the U.S team. With his talents, he should play in some great leagues such as English Premier League or La liga. During the loan with Everton (England), he proved that he fit to play for outside leagues and not waste his time with the MLS. Beside with strict policy of MLS, the U.S talents won’t have many chances to prove their true talent to foreigners. That does not help American soccer at all. Last but not least, the American still love their traditional football more than their new sport (soccer). The football fans are always crowed in the stadiums compare to other sports. The football salary cap is much more than in soccer.Football fields are easy to find than other sports’ fields. The college students easily find football scholarship. All of proofs show that football are only the main sport in the U.S. That again will not help U.S to win one World Cup as they are always to dream about. They will have a chance to prove in South Africa this summer when they will meet England on their fist match. I hope that they will progress to the second round or further.
